Feeding Orlando's Homeless:
Mt. Alvernia High School Central Florida Alumni Association Charity Event

MAHSCFL feeds Orlando's homeless

"Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody,
I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty
than the person who has nothing to eat."
– Mother Theresa.

These words resonated with alumnae of the Mt. Alvernia High School Central Florida Chapter (MAHSCFL), when they partnered with fellow alumna Althea Glen-Wright, organizer of Followers of the Way, to provide a hot meal for over 350 homeless people in Orlando.

The association committed to provide two dinner choices - baked chicken, rice and mixed vegetable or meatloaf, mashed potato with gravy and winter vegetables. In the weeks preceding the event, Glen-Wright sensed that the group was beginning to be daunted by the notion of venturing into unfamiliar territories. After all, this is now routine for her, having done this for over six years. "How do you do this every week Althea?" one curious member asked. Her answer was terse. "It's my passion, my calling" she said.

MAHCFL members, their spouses and friends started working diligently on that Saturday morning to ensure that the boxed-meals and bottled water were loaded-up by mid-afternoon. Homeless men, women and children lined-up, politely thanked the servers and sat somewhere to eat their dinner. One family – a mom and her three school-age daughters took a quick peek in the Styrofoam box and were thrilled at the sight of what looked like a gourmet meal. The youngest girl hugged an almuna and said, "Thank you ma'am. God bless".

As some volunteered the circumstances around their unfortunate situations, members were moved as Althea recognized each person by name and offered a kind word of encouragement. Despite the situation, the whole experience was heart-warming and this small gesture has impacted all those who participated in this event. MAHSCFL is committed to assist with this mission.
